Surry was formed in 1771 from Rowan County. The act became effective April 1, 1771. It is in the north central section of the State and is bounded by the state of Virginia and Stokes, Yadkin, Wilkes and Alleghany counties.2

Surry County is the birthplace of Andy Griffith, one of America's great TV legends. The Andy Griffith Show has fused itself with part of the American identity and become one of our all time favorite series. Many people draw strong connections from the show's town of Mayberry and Mount Airy, NC.
