North Carolina is home of the first attempt to settle the Americas by the English. Even though the settlement of Fort Raleigh failed and became known forever as the "Lost Colony", the Carolina were soon resettled by the English.

North Carolinians are nicknamed the "Tar Heels".

It not exactly evident where this nickname originated, but it seems to have given birth during the Civil War. North Carolina's troops were said to have tar on their heels, because they would not run in battle even as other states retreated.
