Your visit to the Sandhills of North Carolina will not be complete without a stay at the elegant Knollwood House. Living RoomThis gracious and stately home, built in 1927 as a holiday retreat for a wealthy Philadelphia family, has been totally renovated and artfully restored by its present owners, Dick and Mimi Beatty, who opened Knollwood House as a Bed and Breakfast in 1991. Since then, it has become one of the areas' premiere Bed and Breakfast "experiences." Set on five acres, amidst azaleas, holly trees, long leaf pines and towering magnolias, this English manor-style home is as beautifully decorated inside as it is landscaped without. Dick and Mimi have travelled extensively, Sun Roomcollecting 18th and 19th century antiques and these, combined with select family heirlooms, and showcased against the soft pastels, bright stripes and colorful chintzes of the living and dining rooms, create a warm and fascinating haven. Through the French doors, just off the pale yellow living room, the engaging, sun-lit garden room, filled with flowering plants and wicker furniture, offers an arresting view of the back lawn and gazebo and a glimpse of the 14th and 15th Fairways of the famous Donald Ross course at Mid-Pines. The Beatty's have created a wondrous abode, offering their guests all the charm and personal attention of a small, comfortable inn as well as many of the luxuries and amenities of a four-star hotel.
