Cabarrus County was the site of the first gold rush in what is now the Untied States. Twelve-year-old Conrad Reed's discovery of a gold nugget the size of a brick began what became a full-scale mining industry in the Carolinas.
Reed's Gold Main has tours of an early mine by touring underground tunnels and panning for gold in troughs near the creek where Conrad found his amazing rock in 1799.
