Some geologists maintain that Whiteside Mountain, located near Cashiers, is the oldest mountain in the world. Now owned by the Federal Government and managed by the U.S. Forest Service, Whiteside has recently been one of the more successful re-introduction spots for endangered peregrine falcons.
The mountain can be viewed from an overlook on US 64, 5 miles west of Cashiers, or can be accessed by foot from a trailhead and public parking area off Whiteside Mountain road near the overlook.
