Traveling I-40 East, take Exit 100 (Morganton). Take a left coming off the exit ramp. Go 3.2 miles (towards Morganton), and take a left at the stop light onto 181 North. Travel 18.8 miles: You'll find the pull-off on the right at mile marker 20.

The mysterious sighting of lights on Brown Mountain, first seen about 1850. Only on certain evenings after dusk, when observed from the hills of Linville or Wiseman's Gap, the lights can be seen on the mountain, moving up and down for a minute or so, then vanishing. There are many stories behind the origin of these lights.
