Stanly County was formed in 1841 from Montgomery. It is in the central section of the State and is bounded by Montgomery, Richmond, Anson, Union, Cabarrus and Rowan counties.²

Stanly County was named in honor of John Stanly who for many years was a member of the Legislature and several times speaker of the House of Commons.¹
