Craven
was first created as Archdale Precinct of Bath County in 1705. The name
was changed about 1712. It is in the eastern section of the
State and is bounded by Carteret, Jones, Lenoir, Pitt, Beaufort and Pamlico
counties. 2

New Bern, the second oldest town in the state, is situated where the Trent and Neuse rivers meet. History abounds around every corner with over 150 historic landmarks, some dating back to the 18th century.3
It not exactly evident where this nickname originated, but it seems to have given birth during the Civil War. North Carolina's troops were said to have tar on their heels, because they would not run in battle even as other states retreated.
