History for Craven County

The first county seat of Craven County was first called Chattawka, or Chattoocka. In 1723, the name was changed to New Bern. New Bern - the law fixed the spelling in 1897 - is the county seat.1

Craven County was named in honor of William Lord Craven, one of the Lords Proprietors of Carolina.1
