History for Carteret County

In 1723, Beaufort, named in honor of Henry Duke of Beaufort, became the county seat of Carteret County.

Carteret County was named in honor of Sir John Carteret afterwards (1744) Earl of Granville, one of the Lords Proprietors.

North Carolinians are nicknamed the "Tar Heels".

It not exactly evident where this nickname originated, but it seems to have given birth during the Civil War. North Carolina's troops were said to have tar on their heels, because they would not run in battle even as other states retreated.
