Archaeological evidence indicates that Native Americans were living in North Carolina at least 10,000 years ago. For centuries before European contact, these native people lived in harmony with the natural environment, taking no more from the land than they needed to survive. Individual ownership of land was completely alien to them. Fishing, hunting and farming provided food for their tribal groups.

North Carolinians are nicknamed the "Tar Heels".

It not exactly evident where this nickname originated, but it seems to have given birth during the Civil War. North Carolina's troops were said to have tar on their heels, because they would not run in battle even as other states retreated.
