Golf in North Carolina

At the turn of the 20th Century, Donald Ross left his apprenticeship at St. Andrews and ventured to North Carolina where we landed employment with the Tuft's family in North Carolina's Pinehurst. Ross used Pinehurst as a showcase for selling his legendary golf course designs and influenced the American style of golf for generations to come.1

North Carolina golf courses are among the world's finest and most accessible golf courses in the country. From the mountains to the coast, North Carolina is home to a variety of beautifully conditioned golf courses and temperate weather year-round to challenge players of all levels.

When you play golf in North Carolina, you can challenge the subtle dignity and long standing legend of Pinehurst No. 2 and the numerous other courses that dot the famous Sandhills. Visit the North Carolina coast where you can stroll fairways that meander along the ocean and then relax on the beach. You can play a round or two high among mountain scenery.

North Carolinians are nicknamed the "Tar Heels".

It not exactly evident where this nickname originated, but it seems to have given birth during the Civil War. North Carolina's troops were said to have tar on their heels, because they would not run in battle even as other states retreated.
